Kali Puja
Kali Puja, observed on the night of Diwali, is one of the most significant rituals in Bengal. Devotees worship Maa Kali, the fierce form of Shakti, who destroys evil and protects her children. The rituals begin at midnight, as Kali is believed to be most powerful during the night.
An idol or picture of Kali is placed on an altar, decorated with hibiscus flowers, as they are considered her favorite. Offerings include rice, sweets, lentils, and sometimes animal sacrifice in traditional households. The priest chants mantras and performs tantrik rituals with mustard oil lamps and incense. Devotees keep night-long vigils, chanting hymns and offering prayers for protection, strength, and liberation from fear. In Bengal, Kali Puja also represents the worship of dark energy transformed into divine blessing.
